This is John David ‘Roy” Atchison, an assistant U.S. Attorney for the Northern District
of Florida. 53 years old, married with three children. Mr. Atchison has worked in the U.S.
Attorney's Office in Pensacola since the late 1980s, mostly handling asset forfeitures in criminal
cases. Outwardly an upstanding citizen, Atchison lived in the affluent beach community in Gulf
Breeze and was the President of the Gulf Breeze Sports Association, which runs youth baseball,
softball, cheerleading, soccer, football and basketball programs. He coached girls' softball and
basketball in the community.

His wife Barbara is a popular science teacher at Gulf Breeze High School. She won the town’s
teacher-of-the-year award in 2004. Their youngest daughter is an honors student and was on her
high school homecoming court. Their house has rocking chairs on the porch, oaks in the yard and a
wrought-iron fence. It is among the prettiest in town.

According to an FBI affidavit, Atchison sent an instant message August 29th, 2007 to Macomb
County Sheriff's Detective Linda Findlay, who is part of the 6-year-old Macomb Area Computer
Enforcement Team. Detective Findlay had created an online undercover profile of a mother with
minor children who was interested in allowing men to have sex with her children. Over the next
couple of weeks, Atchison and the undercover detective held almost daily online chats during
which he told her that he wanted to have oral, vaginal and anal sex with her fictional 5-year old
daughter.

When the “mother” expressed concern that her “daughter” might be physically harmed as a result
of sexual intercourse with a grown man, Atchison sought to make her feel more at ease with it,
saying “I am always gentle and loving; not to worry, no damage ever, no rough stuff ever. I only
like it soft and nice. Just gotta go slow and very, very easy. I’ve done it plenty.” After about two
weeks of chats, a meeting was established and Atchison allegedly wrote the undercover detective
to tell the five-year old "You found her a sweet boyfriend who will bring her presents".

Atchison flew from Pensacola, FL to Houston and then to Detroit Metropolitan Airport, where he
was to meet the mother. Instead, federal and county agents arrested him. He was carrying
presents for the 5-year old, including a Dora the Explorer doll, hoop earrings, and petroleum jelly.

He was arrested in Michigan and arraigned on three separate counts: attempted enticement of a
minor using the Internet, a charge carrying a potential 30-year sentence; aggravated sexual abuse,
a charge also carrying a potential 30-year sentence; and traveling across state lines to have sex
with someone under 12, a charge that carries a maximum of life in prison upon conviction.

The shock and embarrassment of the situation was immediate.

His Job: Atchison's boss, U.S. Attorney Gregory R. Miller, said that his staff was "deeply saddened
by the arrest." He said his office was cooperating with the FBI, U.S. prosecutors and Michigan
investigators and believed that "in the end, justice will be served." The status of Atchison's
employment was unclear.

His Family: Federal agents obtained a search warrant for Atchison's Florida home. There was no
word on what they sought or found but his wife took a leave of absence after his arrest. Several
people said she was as stunned as anyone by the news. "She’s shell-shocked," said Deputy Chief
Randle, who went with F.B.I. agents to execute a search warrant on the Atchison home, where
they seized at least one computer. "She’s just floored."

The Local Community: Disbelief, distrust, anger, worry.

When in jail, Atchison tried unsuccessfully to hang himself with a bed sheet. One of his three
cellmates saw the suicide attempt around 4 a.m. The cellmate alerted a guard and held Atchison
up to keep him from hanging himself. He tried a second time on a later date and was successful.
