Twenty or thirty years ago, porn was available in magazine form from behind the counter at the corner convenience
store or liquor shop. Men kept their collections under mattresses or in bedside table drawers and pulled them out on
an ad hoc basis. Viewing pornographic movies at the theater was dicey business. What if someone you knew saw you
at the theater? I still remember Peewee Herman getting arrested for indecent exposure at an adult theater.
When the VCR was introduced in the 80’s, the porn industry was revitalized. No longer having to fear getting caught,
you could either buy or rent movies to view in the privacy of your own home.
Now there is the Internet and cell phones that provides access. If you add up revenues from magazines, movies and the
Internet, the adult industry generates over $14 billion each year. As a point of reference, sales of music downloads
generated about $1 billion. The Playboys of yesteryear may have been earmarked and well loved but the user probably
became somewhat indifferent over time to the familiar images.
The biggest and most concerning difference now is there is no end to the variety of porn that can be obtained online.
There are over four million pornographic websites these days; boredom and indifference is no longer an option for
many users.

And despite the fact that the US has a highly active adult industry, there is a
conservative viewpoint on sex that is hard to break. The FCC regulates the words
and images that can be seen on TV or heard over the radio. A line is drawn in the
minds of many as to what is 'good' and 'bad'.
Unfortunately, sexual addiction is not well understood by a majority of Americans
and is labeled as 'bad'. It is the reason a porn addict feels intense shame and
secrecy. It is also the reason a porn addict's partner feels isolation and depression.
Because of this, family members and close friends may not be the best advocates as
you work through this difficult time.
